Our culture teaches us that there is never enough for our lives. If you are strong, you need to become stronger. If you are fast, you need to become faster. You should always become more beautiful, more powerful, and so on. The social media did a “Terrific” job to shape the way we think and behave. As I read the article “YouTube, the Great Radicalizer”, I can’t agree no more with the author. I rely on Youtube as my main resources of getting news but the videos that Youtube feed me make me concern as well. As the author mentioned in the article, “Its algorithm seems to have concluded that people are drawn to content that is more extreme than what they started with – or to incendiary content in general.” When we start to find the stuff we find, and the algorithm will keep feed us the related but more extreme ones to attract us and glue us with Youtube longer and longer so that Google can make more and more money from the comercials.

To counter the radicalizing effects of recommender systems or ways to prevent algorithmic discrimination is never easy. It reuqires that the governments and international organizations to regulate it but the regulations tend not to keep up with the tech develooment. Recommender system makes life easier but it also becomes the biggest threats to the world. We lost ourselves in this huge wave of recommendations from the companies. We don’t what is real. The system itself can’t reconize that if their feeding encouraging people to follow extreme content. The system is never neutrual and they always rank the videos, contents, users. Maybe if we can create the frameworks so that they can always remind us the ethics over profit.
