New Zealand is a long country, but it is not very wide. Its total land area of 267,710 square kilometers makes it roughly 63% of the total size of the U.S. state of California even though it is longer from south to north.
Its population of about 5 million is only a wee bit larger than the combined populations of Los Angeles and San Franciso (cities proper - without the rest of the metro areas).
