Overview

This document contains an analysis of regional data for AICCU, CSU, and UC schools. Previous AICCU Handouts by Region can be found here: https://www.aiccu.edu/factsheets/.

Note: these datasets were pulled by Randy in early June 2019. As updated data is released, this report will be adjusted accordingly.

Data Sources

Data sources for the following tables can be found here:

  • College Insight - for student debt data. Last updated in 2016.

  • California Student Aid Commission - 2017-2018 CalGrant data. We only currently have access to AICCU’s data.

  • IPEDS - for all other information. Note that this is taken from the non-public 2017-2018 12-month enrollment data and as such, will not reflect what is currently shown on the IPEDS website. Will be updated accordingly.

Initial Data Request

The initial data request was as follows:
Table # Request Source Details
1 Undergraduate Enrollment (low to high) IPEDS 12-month enrollment (2017-2018)
2 Total Undergraduate enrollment (all schools) IPEDS 12-month enrollment (2017-2018)
3 Total Graduate enrollment (all schools) IPEDS 12-month enrollment (2017-2018)
4 Average student/faculty ratio IPEDS 2018 non-public data
5 Diversity of undergraduate enrollment IPEDS 12-month enrollment (2017-2018)
6 Average 4/6 year graduation rates IPEDS 2017-2018 provisional dataset
7 Total Cal Grant student enrollment CSAC 2017-2018
8 Average debt of graduates at AICCU, CSU, UC College Insight 2016-2017 data
9 Percentage of undergraduates with debt at AICCU, CSU, UC College Insight 2016-2017 data

Notes

  • Zaytuna College is included in the list of institutions, but has not yet reported to IPEDS.
  • Missing Data 0 total institutions included were grad-only
  • 12-month enrollment vs. fall enrollment Currently using fall 2017 enrollment data. This is the latest enrollment data provided but is an imperfect capture of student numbers (particularly for institutions that enroll year round). On the other hand, it is more recent, given that it captures enrollment as of fall 2017 as opposed to July 2016-June 2017 (the reporting period for 2018 12-month enrollment). Additional factors to consider:

See below for the breakdown of data availability by group:

II. Total Undergraduate enrollment of AICCU institutions (2017-2018 12-month headcount) (Table 1)

III. Undergraduate Enrollment (2017-2018 12-month headcount) (Table 2)

IV. Total Graduate enrollment (2017-2018 12-month headcount) (Table 3)

V. Average Student/Faculty Ratio (Table 4)

VI. Diversity of Undergraduate Enrollment (Table 5)

VII. Average 4 and 6-year Graduation Rates (Table 6)

7/11/19 Note: Excluded four institutions from 4 and 6 year regional average (La Sierra, Charles Drew, Azusa Pacific College, Southern California Institute for Architecture) due to their 0% graduation rate in 4 years. This is likely due to specialized programs that would put it out of sync with other institutions

VIII. Total Cal Grant Student Awardees/Dollars (Table 7)

IX. Average debt of graduates (Table 8)

Note: this pulls data from College Insight, which was last updated in 2016. Less than half of AICCU institutions have debt information in the Insight document, meaning that average debt may be over/under estimated. See the total number of institutions that reported debt data in the section above

X. Average Percentage of Students with Debt (Table 9)

Notes on merging/etc.

There were a number of minor changes made to ensure all of the datasets “clicked”. The following flag files have been created and saved:

  • Aggregated Dataset: Aggregated statistics at the regional level /Users/randytarnowski/Documents/OneDrive - AICCU/RStudio/RCode/RegionalFactsheet_2019/AGG_stats.csv

  • Institutions with Regional Designations and IPEDS IDs: Just a list of institutions with their regional designations and IPEDS id “/Users/randytarnowski/Documents/OneDrive - AICCU/Datasets/2019/RegionalFactsheet/RegionalwithIDs.csv”

  • Institutions Dataset: This includes the 84 that are AICCU institutions as of June 2019. /Users/randytarnowski/Documents/OneDrive - AICCU/RStudio/RCode/RegionalFactsheet_2019/inst_stats.csv
