Development of R as an Open and Free Analytic Platform

Sharing many similarities with S language, R was developed by Ross Ihaka and Robert Gentleman in the Department of Statistics at the University of Auckland, as a computer language and environment for statistical computing and graphics. It provides a wide variety of statistical and graphical techniques and creates products in various formats.
Under the GNU General Public License, R was made a free software. As well, it is an open source that anyone can freely adapt the software to any platform they choose. Due to the vitalization of the Internet and the nature of R as an open and free software, it has outgrown its origins and is still developing through the usersโ€™ collaborative effort. As the founder of R has felt the same, the greatest advantage of R as an open and free software is the chance to work with a large number of talented individuals.
