After hearing at HAI that women had a higher amount of tau for a given level of amyloid, I was curious. I wanted to see if that was the case in our data.

What I found was that women had more tau than men in cortical regions, and men had more tau than women in white matter - all of this is for a given level of amyloid.

At the significance level of < 0.001, after correcting for education and APOE, the following regions significantly differed between men and women:

-Inferior temporal

-entorhinal

-unsegmented whitematter

-lateral orbitofrontal

-SSTSBANK

-ISTHMUSCNG

-posterior cingulate

-lateral orbitofrontal

These regions are visualized below. Note that the linear regressions in these figures are not corrected for education or apoe.

The first 3 regions (all the cortical regions) are significantly different in both slope and y intercept. The rest of the regions (all the whitematter regions) are different in y intercept only.

Again - it doesn’t really look like it in the pictures because I used R’s built in regression rather than correcting for other factors.
