Student Default Loan Data, Dept of Education.

09/27/2017, The U.S. Department of Education today released the FY 2014 three-year federal student loan cohort default rate. The rate increased slightly from 11.3 percent to 11.5 percent for students who entered repayment between fiscal years 2013 and 2014.

The data set contains 4,873 observations, consisting of university information, plan participation size, and 3 years of default data.

The Department of Education uses this data to sanction schools that are facing default rates of 30% or greater for 3 consecutive years or more than 40% for the latest year, or both. While the press release singled out 10 such schools, the data shows as many as 16 meeting this criteria.

However, while Daymar College, Jay's Technical Institute, Headquarter's Academy, Cosmetic Arts, and Culpeper Cosmetology were singled out in the press release, they did not seem to meet the expressed criteria for sanctions.
