Introduction

For information on violent crime in the U.S. in 1973, click here to visit my web app.

The app provides a great interface for learning about violent crime, specifically related to:

  • Murder
  • Assault
  • Rape

Background

The data presented in the app comes from the USArrests data frame, found in the datasets package.

Here is a sample of the data:

head(USArrests)
           Murder Assault UrbanPop Rape
Alabama 13.2 236 58 21.2
Alaska 10.0 263 48 44.5
Arizona 8.1 294 80 31.0
Arkansas 8.8 190 50 19.5
California 9.0 276 91 40.6
Colorado 7.9 204 78 38.7

Application

For each U.S. state, in 1973, the dataset contains:

  • Murder: number of murder arrests (per 100,000)
  • Assault: number of assault arrests (per 100,000)
  • UrbanPop: urban population percent
  • Rape: number of rape arrests (per 100,000)

The app includes a histogram that shows the distribution of states by the number of arrests for the specified crime type. Similarly, it includes a choropleth map of the U.S. that is shaded according to the number of arrests.

States can be filtered by their urban population percent.

Conclusion

My web app provides a one-stop shop for learning about violent crime in the U.S. in 1973.

Using the app, you can:

  • See how the U.S. is distributed by violent crime types
  • Compare states by the number of arrests per crime type
  • Visualize how urban population percent varies by state
