This document visualizes parking data from CHOP and Penn Medicine. We were provided with zip codes for all employees who park in CHOP and Penn Medicine garages.

Below are the current monthly fares for each fare zone of SEPTA’s Trailpass. This will factor into our final costs and how many participants’ passes we can subsidize.

First, I map number of parkers per zip code they are driving from, with SEPTA Regional Rail stations superimposed. The stations are colored by fare zone, corresponding to the prices above. The map below and following table only display stations from the Airport Line, Warminster Line, Wilmington/Newark Line, West Trenton Line, and Media/Elwyn Line, as these are the only regional rail lines that travel directly to University City Station. This was done under the assumption that employees are most likely to use transit if they have a direct travel path to the station closest to hospitals where they work. However, if we don’t want to limit any statements we are able to make from the results of this study, including all regional rail stations and lines might be more generalizable.

Zip codes and associated Regional Rail station information of stations within those zips in descending order by number of parkers in the zip code. Some zip codes are represented multiple times if there are multiple rail stations within that zip code.

Within Philadelphia, the 40 and the 42 are two bus routes that can provide a single-seat commute to HUP and CHOP. The zip codes with the most parkers in Philadelphia are 19146 (Graduate Hospital, Point Breeze) and 19104 (University City). It is possible that employees living in these zip codes use the hospital parking decks for permanent parking rather than simply to park during their work commutes.
