Open source software is something that I hope to see play out in libraries with an increased emphasis. Libraries have long been privacy defenders, but they have been less critical when it comes to adopting new technologies. But as more of library services come from third party vendors, developers, and other organizations, I hope to see librarians pushing back against unacceptable terms of service, and adopting open source solutions, and encouraging library users to adopt open source tools and habits, too.

Whether that’s using Blacklight (https://github.com/projectblacklight/blacklight/wiki) instead of an out of the box Ex Libris software solution, or using R instead of Stata or SAS, I’d like to see more librarians and libraries committing to building their own tools and platforms to provide library services, rather than relying on commercial third parties.
