Introduction
We analyzed the climate data of Harris County, Texas for the period from August 2017 to October 2017 from NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information website. The data set includes the volume of rainfall, wind speed, temperature, and precipitation in the Greater Houston area during this period as we consider these four elements are essential for forecasting the weather.
Harris County, Texas
Harris County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas, located in the southeastern part of the state near Galveston Bay. As of the 2010 Census, the population was 4,092,459,[2] making it the most populous county in Texas and the third most populous county in the United States. Its county seat is Houston, the largest city in Texas and fourth largest city in the United States.
Rainfall in Houston
The station reported a rainfall during August 26 and 30. The maximum volume of rainfall occurred on August 27, reaching approximately 330 mm. The volume of rainfall gradually declined until August 30. It did not rain during the rest of reporting period.
Wind Speed
The wind speed varied from 0 mph to 4 mph during the observed period. The higher wind speeds appeared several days before and after the rainfall with the temperatures below 75 degrees Kelvin. When the rainfall occurred in the end of August, the wind speeds were as low as 2 mph. It is notable that the wind speed were low for the rest of the days.
Temperature
The temperature reached approximate 440 degrees Kelvin when it rained. The range of temperature during that time was from 400 degrees Kelvin to 475 degrees Kelvin. The temperature was low when it did not rain. The high end fell to 400 degrees Kelvin, and the low end fell below 275 degrees Kelvin.
Precipitation
Based on the precipitation reported by the stations, the chances of rain reached the highest on August 27. This graph fits well with the graph of rainfall.
Conclusion
It rained only once in Houston in late August. Interestingly, we found that there is a linear relationship between the volume of rainfall, temperature, and precipitation. In addition, the wind speeds were higher than usual before and after the rainfall. When the volume of rainfall was high, the temperature and precipitation were high as well.
