Data for names frequency was obtained from the INE http://www.ine.es/apellidos/inicio.do.
Data was obtained for females names by “residence province”“ (A Coruña) and sex (female) and is based on 2017 census data.
Once the data is downloaded from the website (in text format), it needs to be read into a data frame and then converted into a list, executing the following code:
rawDocNames<- read.csv("Nombres_Coruna.csv", sep = "\t")
namesCoruna<-as.list(rawDocNames$Total)
names(namesCoruna)<-rawDocNames$Nombre
There are in total 3117 female names with their associated frequencies. Only names that appear at least 5 times in the census are included. We'll use the Nombre (name) and total columns.
dim(rawDocNames)

The github code for the app is in https://github.com/mstorron/femalespanishnames.
The app itself is in https://mstorron.shinyapps.io/femalespanishnames/
When selecting a name from the dropdown menu, the total frequency of the selected name appears on the box on top
The app is good to discover some peculiar names, like Sergia. Maria Carmen (Maricarmen) is the most common name in A Coruña! (it's a well known fact that every Galician knows at least 2 or 3 women called “Maricarmen”“)
