Tornado Prediction Analysis

While any tornado event is dangerous, days with widespread tornado activity over a large area are particularly threatening to life and property. In this study, the subject of tornado “clusters” is investigated. For the purposes of this study, clusters are defined in the context of Storm Prediction Centor probabilistic convective outlooks. Once identified, these tornado clusters are analyzed, both in terms of a long-term climatology (1950-2017) using the Storm Data tornado database.

Prediction domain

Subset the tornado data. Overlay tornado paths on the raster. Each element of the list is a cell subset of the tornado track file. The data frame nTor.df contains the per-cell tornado count, area, and rate. The PathsAll.df data frame contains the tornado attributes listed by cell. Information is repeated for each cell in cases where the path intersects more than one cell. Area is square meter. The unadjusted climatological rate (climoU) has units of tornadoes per 100 x 100 km square per year.
