Questions

Your data analysis must address the following questions:

Across the United States, which types of events (as indicated in the EVTYPE variable) are most harmful with respect to population health?

Looking at the variables in the database measures of harm are the variables FATALITIES and INJURIES. We can start aggregating the data to filter the outcome and make it more tidy and to ease the following step. For both FATALITIES and INJURIES we order them and then we filter the top 10 values.

Let us start with the FATALITIES variable:

harmf<-aggregate(data$FATALITIES~data$EVTYPE, FUN = sum)
harmf<-harmf[order(harmf$`data$FATALITIES`,decreasing = TRUE),]
head(harmf)
## data$EVTYPE data$FATALITIES
## 834 TORNADO 5633
## 130 EXCESSIVE HEAT 1903
## 153 FLASH FLOOD 978
## 275 HEAT 937
## 464 LIGHTNING 816
## 856 TSTM WIND 504
harmftop<-harmf[1:10,]
head(harmftop)
## data$EVTYPE data$FATALITIES
## 834 TORNADO 5633
## 130 EXCESSIVE HEAT 1903
## 153 FLASH FLOOD 978
## 275 HEAT 937
## 464 LIGHTNING 816
## 856 TSTM WIND 504

then the INJURIES variable:

harmj<-aggregate(data$INJURIES~data$EVTYPE, FUN = sum)
harmj<-harmj[order(harmj$`data$INJURIES`,decreasing = TRUE),]
head(harmj)
## data$EVTYPE data$INJURIES
## 834 TORNADO 91346
## 856 TSTM WIND 6957
## 170 FLOOD 6789
## 130 EXCESSIVE HEAT 6525
## 464 LIGHTNING 5230
## 275 HEAT 2100
harmjtop<-harmj[1:10,]
head(harmjtop)
## data$EVTYPE data$INJURIES
## 834 TORNADO 91346
## 856 TSTM WIND 6957
## 170 FLOOD 6789
## 130 EXCESSIVE HEAT 6525
## 464 LIGHTNING 5230
## 275 HEAT 2100

We draw the graphs for both FATALITIES and INJURIES:

par(mfrow=c(1,2))
barplot(harmftop$`data$FATALITIES`,names.arg=harmftop$`data$EVTYPE`,las=3,main = "Fatalities",ylab = "Number of Fatalities")
barplot(harmjtop$`data$INJURIES`,names.arg=harmjtop$`data$EVTYPE`,las=3, main = "Injuries",ylab = "Number of Injuries")

Across the United States, which types of events have the greatest economic consequences?

We follow a similar route to the above to explore the economic impact, we consider the two damages variables wich are PROPDMG (Property Damage) and CROPDMG (Crop Damage)

Let us start with the PROPDMG variable:

propdmg<-aggregate(data$PROPDMG~data$EVTYPE, FUN = sum)
propdmg<-propdmg[order(propdmg$`data$PROPDMG`,decreasing = TRUE),]
head(propdmg)
## data$EVTYPE data$PROPDMG
## 834 TORNADO 3212258.2
## 153 FLASH FLOOD 1420124.6
## 856 TSTM WIND 1335965.6
## 170 FLOOD 899938.5
## 760 THUNDERSTORM WIND 876844.2
## 244 HAIL 688693.4
propdmgtop<-propdmg[1:10,]
head(propdmgtop)
## data$EVTYPE data$PROPDMG
## 834 TORNADO 3212258.2
## 153 FLASH FLOOD 1420124.6
## 856 TSTM WIND 1335965.6
## 170 FLOOD 899938.5
## 760 THUNDERSTORM WIND 876844.2
## 244 HAIL 688693.4

then the CROPDMG variable:

cropdmg<-aggregate(data$CROPDMG~data$EVTYPE, FUN = sum)
cropdmg<-cropdmg[order(cropdmg$`data$CROPDMG`,decreasing = TRUE),]
head(cropdmg)
## data$EVTYPE data$CROPDMG
## 244 HAIL 579596.28
## 153 FLASH FLOOD 179200.46
## 170 FLOOD 168037.88
## 856 TSTM WIND 109202.60
## 834 TORNADO 100018.52
## 760 THUNDERSTORM WIND 66791.45
cropdmgtop<-cropdmg[1:10,]
head(cropdmgtop)
## data$EVTYPE data$CROPDMG
## 244 HAIL 579596.28
## 153 FLASH FLOOD 179200.46
## 170 FLOOD 168037.88
## 856 TSTM WIND 109202.60
## 834 TORNADO 100018.52
## 760 THUNDERSTORM WIND 66791.45

we finally draw the graphs for both variables:

par(mfrow=c(1,2))
barplot(propdmgtop$`data$PROPDMG`,names.arg=propdmgtop$`data$EVTYPE`,las=3,main = "Property Damage",ylab = "Number of Property Damages")
barplot(cropdmgtop$`data$CROPDMG`,names.arg=cropdmgtop$`data$EVTYPE`,las=3, main = "Crop Damage",ylab = "Number of Crop Damage")

Results

Tornado is the most harmful type of event overshadowing by great lenght all other events. As for economic damage, property damage is strongly caused by Tornados while Hail is the major source of crop damage.
