Manufacturer Discussion

The Fuel Efficiency Comparison Over Time By Manufacturer plot shows the average number of miles the vehicles for six major car manufacturers could drive per gallon while in the city for the year 1999 and 2008. The mpg of the average Audi, Ford, and Hyundai vehicle decrease from 1999 to 2008, while the average Chevrolet, Dodge, and Honda vehicle had its mpg go down from the year 1999 to 2008. However, it is also clear that Honda has a major lead in fuel efficiency of its competitors.

Vehicle Class Discussion

The Fuel Efficiency Comparison Over Time By Vehicle Class plot shows the average number of miles the vehicles six vehicle class could drive per gallon while in the city for the year 1999 and 2008. Here, we see the subcompact car having a surprising major loss in fuel efficienct from 1999 to 2008, even being surpassed by the compact and midsize vehicles. Both the compact and midsize vehicles performed substantially better in 2008 than in 1999 with their fuel efficiencies. The other three vehicle types remain relatively constant with the exception of the minivan losing fuel efficiency on average.
