Summary

You work for Motor Trend, a magazine about the automobile industry. Looking at a data set of a collection of cars, they are interested in exploring the relationship between a set of variables and miles per gallon (MPG) (outcome). They are particularly interested in the following two questions:

“Is an automatic or manual transmission better for MPG” “Quantify the MPG difference between automatic and manual transmissions”

The Dataset

[, 1] mpg Miles/(US) gallon [, 2] cyl Number of cylinders [, 3] disp Displacement (cu.in.) [, 4] hp Gross horsepower [, 5] drat Rear axle ratio [, 6] wt Weight (1000 lbs) [, 7] qsec 1/4 mile time [, 8] vs Engine (0 = V-shaped, 1 = straight) [, 9] am Transmission (0 = automatic, 1 = manual) [,10] gear Number of forward gears [,11] carb Number of carburetors

Explorative Data Analysis

At first we take a look at the mtcars dataset to get a broad overview:

Regression Models

Let’s take a look on the mean mileage of both transmission types.

aggregate(mpg ~ am, data = mtcars, mean)
## am mpg
## 1 0 17.14737
## 2 1 24.39231

The mean mileage in dependency of transmission is 17.15 miles for automatic and 24.4 for manual (Appendix 1).

Linear Regression Models

transmission <- factor(mtcars$am, labels = c("automatic", "manual"))
init <- (lm(mpg ~ am, data = mtcars))
summary(init)

## F-statistic: 16.86 on 1 and 30 DF, p-value: 0.000285

The mean values are confirmed by the estimation of the linear model by giving a difference of 7.25. The p-value is <0.05 so we can reject the null-hypothesis. Our R-squared on the other hand only explains 36% of the variance so we should include more variables in our model.

As we include more variables we see the differences in mileage shrink between manual and automatic to 2.52. Also our R-squared value is much higher now.
