Ch. 4: Foundations for inference
4.47 Practical vs. statistical. Determine whether the following statement is true or false, and explain your reasoning: “With large sample sizes, even small differences between the null value and the point estimate can be statistically significant.”
Answer: (TRUE) Yes, I agree that statistically significant differences can be found even with very small differences between the null value and the point estimate if the sample size your working with is large enough. As a matter of fact, differences between any sample means will be significant if the sample is large enough.
Point estimates get more accurate and the difference between the mean and null value can be easily recognized as the sample size gets larger. It’s important to keep in mind that although the difference is said to be STATISTICALLY significant, it’s not always the case that it has any PRACTICALLY implication.
