This data covers publications in Psychological Science between the years 2000 and 2015. Let’s start with some descriptives. For the years 2000-2003, we coded all articles published in the 6 annual issues of the journal. For the years 2004-2015 when the number of issues increased to 12, we randomly selected 6 issues from each year. We coded a total of 1761 articles.
In total, the proportionof female authors (first + coauthors) through out the years has been consistenly below 50%, ranging between 30%-45%. As evident in the plot below, there is no discernible change in this trend over time.
Looking at the first authors, 59.4% of first authors were male, 40.6% were female, (0.3% uknown). Below you can see this break down by year.
We coded the gender of co-authors. Almost half (43.2%) of non-single author publications had zero female coauthors. Out of 796 articles with no female coauthors, 33.3% had female first authors and 66.7% had male first authors.
The plot below shows the number of publications without female coauthors has remained the same through out the years; close to 50%.
