Source of data
- The data came from the free law project.
- The data was retrieved from bulk data file. For more information about bulk data files, see here. NH federal district court cases are listed under “All dockets from all jurisdictions:”.
- The data includes New Hampshire federal district civil cases (nhd), excluding bankruptcy cases (nhb) and state sumpreme court cases (nh).
- The data goes as far back as 1991 and includes 6,588 cases.
Import and unzip
Convert to data frame and save it to disk
Clean data
- Duplicates of pacer case id were eliminated. Some pacer case ids show up multiple times.
- Cases with NA in the nature of suit were dropped.
- Excluded are the following nature of suits:
- “Prisoner: Civil Rights”,
- “Habeas Corpus (General)”,
- “Social Security: DIWC/DIWW”,
- “Social Security: SSID Tit. XVI”,
- “Prisoner: Vacate Sentence”,
- “Prisoner - Prison Condition”,
- “625 Drug Related Seizure of Property”,
- “Bankruptcy Appeal (801)”,
- “Bankruptcy Withdrawal”,
- “465 Other Immigration Actions”,
- “550 Prisoner: Civil Rights”
- blank
- After the cleanup, the number of observations decreased to 2,511 from 6,588. All cases in the filtered dataset has a unique pacer case id and docket numer.
- A new variable, year_filed, was created from date_filed. There are more than 2,000 cases that have NA in the variable, date_filed.

Summary of data
Interpretation
- 124 levels are reported for the nature of suit. The top category in the nature of suit is Civil Rights: Other (344), followed by Contract: Other (231) and Civil Rights: Jobs (177).
- 280 levels are reported for Causes of Action. The top cateogory in cause is Civil Rights Act (200), followed by Diversity-Personal Injury (91) and Petition for Removal- Petition to Quiet Title (90).
