Tornado events caused by far the most injuies across the US, accounting for over 65% of injuries and 37% of all fatalities. Excessive heat and flooding also proved to be large sources of injuries and fatalities. By far the greatest damage to US economic well being from storms is caused by tornodos, flash floods and high winds (TSTM WIND), causing over 54.8% of reported property damage. Tornodos alone accounted for over $410 million dollars worth of damage.
The data for this report comes in the form of a comma-serperated-value file compressed via the bzip2 algorithm. The NOAA Storm Data was obtained here:

The data covers a period from 1950 to the end of November 2011. During this period the data shows that there were 902297 recorded storm events, with 140528 injuries and 15145 deaths.

After loading we attempt some minor data cleaning including normalizing some of the variables and multiplying the damage figures so as to be in actual dollar amounts. I used the following expense classifiers for property and crop damage for multiples:
