This is an R Markdown document. Markdown is a simple formatting syntax for authoring HTML, PDF, and MS Word documents. For more details on using R Markdown see http://rmarkdown.rstudio.com.

When you click the Knit button a document will be generated that includes both content as well as the output of any embedded R code chunks within the document. You can embed an R code chunk like this:

Note that the echo = FALSE parameter was added to the code chunk to prevent printing of the R code that generated the plot.

S started as a research project at Bell Labs a few decades ago, it is a language that was developed for data analysis, statistical modeling, simulation and graphics. However, it is a general-purpose language with some powerful features — it could (and does) have uses far removed from data analysis. S-Plus and R are the dialect of the S language. S-Plus compared to R offers: a highly developed graphical user interface (GUI), the standard data files for S and R are not compatible, graphical output differs, and interface to other software, especially databases, are entirely different. Free and open-source software (FOSS) is software that can be classified as both free software and open-source software. That is, anyone is freely licensed to use, copy, study, and change the software in any way, and the source code is openly shared so that people are encouraged to voluntarily improve the design of the software.
