This map shows the locations of full-service grocery stores in Washington D.C. that were active in 2017, labeled by ward. (The District of Columbia is divided into eight wards of approximately equal population; each Ward elects one member of the District Council.)

The map shows that grocery stores are scarcer in the historically poorer and underserved Wards 7 and 8 east of the Anacostia River. Among the challenges that residents of these communities face is a lack of access to a full range of affordable and nutritious food. See Wikipedia’s entry for “Food desert” for more information.
