Description of the project

The data used for this assignment contains information regarding bomb strikes in Rotterdam between 1940 and 1945. Specifically, the original data reports bomb strike impact locations, details regarding the strikes and the dates on which the strikes occured. This data was used to derive longitude and latitude coordinates, which have subsequently been used to make a plot using leaflet.

The application

Using the previously described data, a shiny application has been built which shows the map of Rotterdam and the bomb strike impact locations between 1940 and 1945. Additionally, it offers the following features:

  • The option to select the years, ranging from 1940 to 1945, for which the impact locations are shown;
  • The option to overlay the map with a heatmap and a district shapefile, to further evaluate which areas were hit the hardest;
  • The option to cluster the impact location markers, to reduce visual clutter when zooming out.
