“What do we know about the role of perception in visualization?” and “Why is it important?”

Visualization is used to make conclusions from analyzing data and patterns. In Cleaveland and McGill they state that a scientific foundation is needed for data analysis and data presentation and they present steps that are established in creating a foundation. They use graphical perception which is using the visual information on grpahs. The first step in grpahical perception is a set of elementary perceptual tasks and the second step is the ordering of the tasks basing on how pepople perform them.

In Heer and Bostock they focus on how understaing perception is important for effective visualization. Crowdscourcing presents as an advantage with its low cost and scalibility. In this paper they focus on assessing Amazon’s Mechanical Turk as the platform for experiments with graphical perception.

In both papers they write about how graphical perception is important for visualization.

In Healy’s Perception in Visualization it talks about how human perception plays an important role in data visualization. This will help improve quality and quantity of the data. This paper summarizes theories in psychophysics and the importance to scintific and information visualization.

In Introdcution of Human perception and visualization paper the authors talk about how high dimensinality and complexity for computational visualization.
