The dplyr package makes data manipulation in R fast and easy. There are thousands of great examples online explaining how to work with dplyr’s 5 verbs and pipes. The point here is just to show one pipe operation, namely how to apply a function to a single variable after performing some pipe operations. This is extremely easy to do, but it took me some time to actually get to know this “trick”.
First load the mtcars data.

Say we want to get the mean mpg of the cars with 6 cyl. We could create a new dataset just filtering for 6 cyl and then use base R functions for our analysis. But there’s an easy way to do this in a single line:
mtcars %>% filter(cyl == 6) %>% '$'(mpg) %>% mean()

It’s nothing fancy, but very helpful. Of course one can use this in a more complex pipe with joins, selects, etc.
