Visualising Spatial Data

  • Leaflet is an open-source JavaScript library for creating web-maps
  • Available to download on CRAN
  • install.packages("leaflet")
  • Leaflet for R is a good place to start

Let's look at a quick example, using leaflet to map the Grafton St. Branch

Small Area Population Statistics (SAPS) 2016

Census Data

  • Census carried out in 2016
  • Full set of results released July 2017 (SAPS)
  • Access the SAPS dataset and boundary shapefiles here
  • Spatially aggregated to Small Area level
  • Rich dataset - 804 variables for 18,641 Small Areas

Geodemographic Classification

  • Group Small Areas based on similar characteristics
  • Use the social and economic characteristics of people living in those areas
  • Commercial applications of this are valuable
  • Profile and find customers
  • Targeting customers

Geodemographic Classification

  • An Open Source Geodemographic Classification of Small Areas in the Republic of Ireland
  • National Centre for Geocomputation (NCG) Maynooth University
  • SAPS 2011 Data

Overview of Geo-demographic Classification

  1. Create set of derived variables from Census data

  2. Subject them to Principal Components Analysis (PCA)

  3. Identify subset of components to use in k-means

  4. Run k-means clustering on your component variables

  5. Identify Characteristics of Clusters
