The Reproducibility Project seeks to understand how replaceable an experiment is. They replicate original experiments in an attempt to see if the replication studies yield the same results as the original studies. The main goal in many scientific psychological endeavors is to establish cause and effect relation in experiments. After retrieving results from an experiment it is important that the evidence or method used is replicable. Replicability of the process further solidifies a study or claim. The Reproducibility Project has repeated one-hundred studies of published psychological experimental and correlational studies. They then measure the “success” of their results and see how significant their findings are.
In Valerie Purdie-Vaughns’ paper, Vaughns writes about how social identity contingencies can cause either feelings of being threatened or safety amongst people of color, especially African-Americans. All people have some sort of social identity. Humans are social animals. The ways in which one is viewed is very important in terms of self esteem, productivity, and healthy connections. A social identity can be any label that socially describes an individual- from immigrant, to black female, to heterosexual male.
Vaughns explains that social cues in mainstream environments are very powerful. Individuals belonging to a certain identity watch for special clues in environments that prepare them for how to feel in that setting. A few positive social cues concerning the identity of a previously oppressed or marginalized group member can enhance productivity in the workplace and create feelings of fairness or belonging. Likewise, negative social contingencies form feelings of mistrust and isolation. Vaughns’ findings in her Experiment 3 shows that even social cues intended to be positive about a certain group, in this case African-Americans, can limit comfort and destroy trust towards the mainstream environment. African-American employees within a good natured pro-colorblindness work setting felt marginalized and cast aside when the environment was mostly white, but this was not so apparent when the environment was heavily diverse. In a diversity valuing work setting, even when there was a white majority the black employees still demonstrated feelings of comfort. This is an R Markdown Notebook.
