Hello all. My name is Reed Oliver and I’m a born and raised native of Louisville, Ky. I am a proud Kentuckian and will talk bourbon with anybody who is willing to listen. I’m also a huge audiophile and I’m always on the search for new music. I decided on the MSBA at Wake because I realized in my undergraduates studies that I love problem-solving with math and data science/analytics have created a new frontier of possibilities in that vein. Some activities I enjoy in my down time include:
I spent my time as an undergrad at Furman University. I was a double major in physics and philosophy and spent lots of time trying answer questions that felt unanswerable. In physics, I enjoyed studying Quantum Mechanics for its abstractness, and in philsophy I devoted a lot of time to studying 19th/20th century thinkers. Despite eventually choosing to pursue a career in a left-brained field, I like to give ample credit to my studies in philosophy for helping steer me on my course (Espeically Being and Time by Martin Heidegger for all those interested).
In two summers as a research intern, I worked at the Cardiovascular Innovation Institute, an affiliate of Jewish Hospital, and at the University of Louisville with the Materials Innovation Guild during an REU experience. My research at the former involved image data analysis of stem cell derived cardiovascular tissue patches, where I utilized 3D segmentation software and learned confocal microscopy techniques. At the latter, I worked on 3D printing materials development with biomedical application.
I do not have any formal training in R, however while I was at Furman I learned a semester of Python and used Mathematica extensively.
