Why a tool for eGFR

Chronic Kidney Disease is becoming more prevalent

  • aging population, obesity, alcohol, diabetes, hypertension, are risk factors and they are getting more prevalent.

Detecting failing renal function early can help manage it better and less expensively

No simple blood test exists for this purpose

Renal function can be determined but is a research procedure

Plasma creatinine level is any blood test but it has to be interpreted in light of many patient specific factors

Algorithm for estimating eGFR

  • There are many algorithms that have been well-studied and validated for clinical use. Click here for the details
  • Among the best known is the Modified Diet in Renal Disease -MDRD - study alogorithm
  • MDRD needs plasma creatinine, age in years, whether the patient is male or female, and whether the patient's ethnicity is Black or Other
  • The formla that takes these variables and calculates the eGFR is

    \[eGFR = 186*(creatinine/88.4)^-1.154 * Age^-0.203 * (0.742 if female) * (1.210 if black)\]

  • A value of eGFR under 30 indicates severe renal impairment, between 31 and 60 is moderate renal impairment, and above 60 indicates normal renal function.

My eGFR Shiny App

The algorithm has been implemented in a Shiny App written in R
