The state’s entrepreneurial activity is heavily concentrated in southeastern regions along the border with Massachusetts. Hillsborough County, Rockingham County, and Merrimack County attracted the most of the new trade names.
The top cities for trade name registrations are Manchester and Nashua in that order.
A vast majority of the trade names were registered by New Hampshire residents. To discern the patterns of trade names registered by non-New Hampshire residents, New Hampshire was excluded in the heatmap below. The lighter color indicates that, outside of New Hampshire, Massachusetts residents registered the largest number of trade names. The heatmap also shows that the three southern counties are the top locations for these businesses.
The heatmap below, excluding both New Hampshire and Massachusetts, shows that a lot of the trade name registrations also come from the other two northern New England states - Maine and Vermont. And the location of the businesses is determined by the proximity to the owner’s home address. Maine residents register their trade names largely in Strafford and Carroll County, while Vermont residents do in Coos, Grafton and Sullivan.
The heatmap below, excluding all six New England states, identifies other major states outside New England. They tend to be, with no surprise, the most populous states in the country - Texas, California, New York and Florida. In addition, interestingly, a couple of southern states stand out - Kentucky and Tennessee.
