The HYG database (v3.0) is a compilation of interesting stellar data from a variety of catalogs. The name comes from the three catalogs comprising its data: Hipparcos, Yale, and Gliese.
This database itself is a CSV file. It contains ALL stars within 50 parsecs (about 160 light years) from the Sun. On the net slide a subset of the stars are shown, those that are closer to the Sun than 6 parsec, in a 3D scatter plot. The stars are color coded based on the star's apparent visual magnitude. X, Y, and Z are the Cartesian coordinates of the stars, in a system based on the equatorial coordinates as seen from Earth.
