In this chunk I created a new variable called survival, which is the numerical version of the variable “survived”, where 0 is equivlenet to not surviving, and 1 is equivelent to surviving. Then, I obtained the maximum and minimum values for age and fare so that I could use them in my range for the following analyses.

In the above analysis, I estimated the age effect of surviving the titanic using zelig 5. First, I estimated the model, then I set used the command “set range” to set the maximum and minimum values for age, and ultimately run the simulation that estimates the probability of surviving based on age.
The results show that there is a difference in the probability of surviving based on ones age, such that the older one gets, the less likely that they are to survive the titanic. There is an approximate .316 (31.6%) difference in the mean survival probability in 0 year olds as compared to 80 year olds.

In the chunk above, I estimated the the effect of the price of ticket on surviving the titanic using zelig 5. First, I estimated the model, then I use the command “set range” to set the maximum and minimum values for fare, and then ran the simulate that estimates the probability of surviving based on fare price.
The results show that fare is not a significant contributor to one’s probability of surviving the titanic. There is only a .021 (2.1%) difference in the mean survival rate of those who paid 0 dollars for a ticket and those who paid 512 dollars for a ticket.

In the chunk above, I continued to extend my analyses to the probability of surviving the titanic based off one’s sex. First I estimated the model, then I set x and x1 as male and female, then proceeded to run the simulation. Last, I estimated the first difference of sex.
The results of the simulation show that females have a higher probability of surviving the titanic than their male counterparts, such that females have have a 39% chance of surviving the titanic and males have only a 14% chance of survival. The first difference tells us that the difference between survival for males and females is 25%.

In the above chunk, I ran a simulation to estimate the probability of sex AND class on surviving the titanic. In this simulation, I estimated the probability of surviving the titanic in first class, and estimated the difference between males and females.
The results show that there is a significant difference between the chance of survival for men and women in first class. Females have a 97% chance of survival if they were seated in first class, as comapred to males who have a 45% chance of survival. Taken together, males have a better chance at survival in first class than anywhere else.

In this simulation, I estimated the probability of surviving the titanic in third class class, and estimated the difference between males and females.
The results show, again, that females have a higher chance of surviving the titanic than males do, such that their probability of surviving is .40 (40%), and the chance of male survival is .14 (14%). Taken with the other results, females in third class have a lower chance of survival than females in any other cabin. It is also worth noting that males do not have a different chance of surviving in the second or third class.

Here, I created a subset of the data called “Health” which is county level health data that I obtained from social explorer. I then renamed the column headers to be more inutive, and used the sapply command to obtain the maximum and minimum values. Last, I obtained the mean value of the teen birth rate for each county, and created a new dichotmous variable that indicates whether a county had a teen birth rate either below or above the mean. I did this so that I could interepret the results of my simulation more clearly.

After the data was more tidy, I continued to estimate my linear regression using Zelig 5. I decided to investigate how the percentage of current smokers in a county effect a county’s teen birth rate (above or below average). The dependent variable is if the teen birth rate is above or below average, and the IV is the percent of current smokers in county. I had originally estimated this model with 3 other independent variables, but the only variable with significant results was the percentage of current smokers in the county.

After I estimated the model, I set the range for the simulation as the maximum and minimum percent of smokers in the county. I then proceeded to run the simulation.
The results show a 1.04 change in means from the counties with the lowest percent of smokers to the counties with the most. This indicates that there is a higher chance of an above average teen birth rate in counties with a higher percent of current smokers.
