Linear format equations and Math AutoCorrect in Word

Math AutoCorrect symbols

  • Type one of the following codes followed by a delimiting term.
    • For example, after you type a code press SPACEBAR or ENTER.
  • To ensure that the Math AutoCorrect symbols appear the same in your document as they do in the AutoCorrect dialog box, on the Home tab, in the Font group, select Cambria Math.

Some very useful symbols

From MS Word Tricks

Symbol Type Symbol Type
\(\delta\) \delta \(\Delta\) \Delta
\(\times\) \times \(\div\) \div
\(\pm\) \pm \(\infty\) \infty
\(\neq\) \neq \(\ge\) \geq
\(\le\) \leq \(^\circ\) \degree
\(\rightarrow\) \rightarrow \(\Rightarrow\) \Rightarrow

Special Handling

Type equations in linear format.

You can type most equations quickly by using Math AutoCorrect codes.

For example, type this:

\eqarray(x+1&=2@1+2+3+y&=z@3/x&=6)<space>

To get:

\[\begin{align*} x+1&=2\\ 1+2+3+y&=z\\ \frac{3}{x}&=6 \end{align*}\]

Helpful documentation for more advaced commands

Examples: Commonly needed commands

Vectors

Type (abc)\vec<space><space> to get

\[\vec{abc}\]

Fractions

Type a/(b+c)<space> to get

\[\frac{a}{b+c}\]

Examples: Commonly needed commands

Parentheses

Type (a+b/c)<space> to get

\[\left(a+\frac{b}{c}\right)\]

Limits

Type lim_(n->\infty)<space>1/n<space> to get

\[\lim_{x\rightarrow \infty}\frac{1}{n}\]

Examples: Commonly needed commands

Matrices

Type (\matrix(a&b&c@d&e&f))<space> to get

\[\begin{pmatrix} a&b&c\\d&e&f \end{pmatrix}\]

Radicals

Type \sqrt(5&a^2)<space><space> to get

\[\sqrt[5]{a^2}\]
