Why we are here

• < 1997: Year-round recreational red snapper season
  • Sustainable Fisheries Act required establishment of recreational quotas
• 1997 - 1999: In season quotal monitoring, season shortened each year
  • 1999 Temporary increase in size limit from 15 to 18 in. TL (June 4 - August 29)
  • Ineeffective as it increased discard mortality
• 2000: Implemented fixed season
  • Initially April 15 - October 31, 16-inch TL min. size limit, 4 fish bag limit
  • Recalculated April 21 - October 31 to allow for retained catch from captain and crew on for-hire vessels
  • Remained until 2007
• 2008: Revised rebuilding plan, implemented June 1 - September 15 season
  • Bag limit reduced to 2-fish; zero bag limit for captain and crew of for-hire vessels
