Airline Delays

Every airline tries to launch it's airplanes on a predictable schedule. But delays happen. This application will examine departure delays at major Florida airports during January 2008.

Dependent Variables

  • Delay time: Can remove extremely long delays as they are statistically very rare.
  • Departure Airport: Only the 5 major airports in Florida are listed.
  • Airline: All airlines with flights at the 5 airports are listed.

Data Preparation

Original flight data for 2008 downloaded from http://stat-computing.org/dataexpo/2009/the-data.html

Pre-Processing:

  • Only January flights are considered. In general, the weather in Florida in January is mild and therefore less weather-related delays should be in the data set.
  • Removed Cancelled and Diverted flights
  • Filter to only the following airports: “JAX”,“MCO”,“MIA”,“FLL”,“TPA”
  • Restricted to only delays of less than 120 minutes
  • Airline name is shortened to only the first word for display

Worst Offenders

Total Number of Flights at each Airport

Origin TotalFlights
MCO 10815
TPA 6586
FLL 5928
MIA 5321
JAX 2839

So, who and where do you NOT want to fly with if you are in a hurry?

Origin Name MeanDelay
TPA Comair 20.0
MIA American 13.8
JAX Mesa 12.6
MCO American 12.4
JAX United 10.4

Summary

While delays at airports are unavoidable, certain airports and certain airlines have significantly more departure delays on average than others.

Additional months should be studied to determine if January is the best choice for comparisons.
