1. Movie Preferences among City Residents vs. Rural Residents
The movie industry in the United States is a billion dollar business and is showing no sign of decline. With blockbuster titles such as Avatar and The Avengers, producing films has generated a significant amount of jobs and audience viewership and followings. However, is there a difference of preferences between those who live in the city juxtaposed with people who live in rural areas? Due to different lifestyles and environments, are people from the city and countryside more likely to favor different movie genres. As a potential project, I would like to analyze which type of movie tickets are sold in these regions. For example, are people in the city more people likely to purchase tickets for comic-book, adventure or action films versus romantic, comedy and sci-fi films in rural areas? Specific attention will be given to demographics, age, gender, ethnicity, and season.
2. Prediction of Lifetime Sales of the Nintendo Switch
In just a few weeks, Nintendo will release its long awaited console throughout retailers worldwide. The Nintendo Switch is the next console in Nintendo’s lineup of proprietary machines and will deliver an innovative way to experience video games. However, Nintendo is in a tight spot considering the failure of their previous console, the Nintendo Wii U, which only sold less than 14 million units in its lifespan. Compared to the Nintendo Wii U’s predecessor the Nintendo Wii which sold over 100 million consoles, it is critical for Nintendo to make the Nintendo Switch successful in order for them to remain competitive in the hardware domain of the video game market. The DFC intelligence group, a market research group that conducts research for the video game sector, has predicted that the Nintendo Switch will sell around 40 million units by 2020. As a future data analytics project, I would like to use R and also make my own prediction based on factors such as pre-orders and price to as to how many consoles Nintendo will sell and whether the Nintendo Switch will be successful or not.
3. Dream Jobs for Students that Graduate from Queens College
Numerous students from around the world attend Queens College in order to obtain an invaluable education that will help them acquire a profession of their choice. Additionally, many colleges and universities around the United States provide statistics regarding how many students receive jobs after graduation. For many students who are entering college for the first time, a school that has a very high percentage of students working or finding work after graduation is often an incentive for them to apply to that school. However, do students always get hired to a job of their choice or in their field? For instance, although a school can list that 90% of students get hired upon graduation, in reality, how many of those students pursued those jobs based on preference and major. Did a student who majored in computer science from XYZ University land a software developer or programming job after graduation or are they working as an Account Executive at a car manufacturing company. Using R and data analytical techniques, I would like to gain insight on how many Queens College students obtain their dream job upon or after graduation.
