type answer. Mean is greater that the median because it is a skwed to the right histogram. There are many smaller values as data points to the right and few larger data points to the left. The extreme large values will offset the mean and make it larger than the meddain
type answer. The mean and median are equal because the histogram is symmetrical because the graph is a bell shaped curve. There is an equilibirum between large and small values that create the mean, and the median being the middle number will fall in the middle as well, making the mean and the median equal.
type answer. The mean is less than the median because it is a skwed to the left histogram. THere are many larger values as fate points to the left and fewer smaller data points to the right. The extreme small values will offset the mean and make it smaller thatn the median.

Using the empirical rule to make general statements about the length of the eruptions would be ideal becuase the data in problem 26 3.1 is very much similar to the data for this particular problem. Because they are so similar, using the empirical rule which takes into account the difference in amoung of standard deviation, (1,2,3) it would be applicable. Also, both data are roughly bell shaped curves and the empiricial rule is what is used when there is a bell shaped curve in terms of identifiying the number of standard devations the data is away from the value in the middle of the bell curve. Therefore, the emirical rule wouls very much be applicable here.
The standard deviation is 6.5 and that goes best into 12 (difference between 92 and 116) approximatley 2 times. Therefore there are 2 standard deviations from the mean. This means that 95% of the eruptions lasted in between 92 and 116 seconds.
d)93.2%
e)The standard deviation is 6.5 and that best goes into 8 (the difference between 90 and 98) appromximatley 1 time. Therefore, there is 1 standard deviation from the mean. This means that 68% of the eruptions lasted less than 98. seconds.
f)11.4%
