Week 4 Assignment - Oscar Nominees

Application Overview

For the Week 4 assignment in Developing Data Products, I have built an application that makes it possible to explore Oscar Nominees from 1985 to current, with particular focus on their Gross Box Office amount and the run time of the film.

The data set being used for this chart was manually built over time and sources information from various locations. Future iterations of this application would be focused on standardizing the data set behind it.

Using the App

The app can be used to manipulate the scatter plot in three different ways. 1) Selecting the category the film was nominated in. 2) Selecting the years to include, the min and max being 1985 and 2016, respectively. 3) An option to only display winners.

The average Gross Amount of whatever selections made will be displayed in the chart.

Hovering over each point will allow provide the specific Gross and Run Time of the point, as well as the film name, the year it was nominated, and the actual nominee (for Best Picture, the film name is also the nominee).

Example Use Case

The app would allow someone to filter down to see the last five Best Picture Winners and calculate the average gross box office amount of those films. The code below shows how the average is calculated with placeholders for the dynamic inputs in the app.

data <- Oscars %>%
      filter(year >= 2012 & year <= 2016
             & WinnerFlag == 1 & category == "Best Picture")
mean(data$Gross)/1000000
[1] 139.8995
