The basic goal of this report is to explore the NOAA Storm Database and answer some basic questions about severe weather events.

The events in the database start in the year 1950 and end in November 2011. In the earlier years of the database there are generally fewer events recorded, most likely due to a lack of good records. More recent years should be considered more complete.

We can see that there 985 levels of the EVTYPE variable whis is more than one name of the same event type e.g. WINTER STORMS,WINTER STORM,
and WATER SPOUT, WATERSPOUT,WATERSPOUT-, WATERSPOUT/ so we will convert to lower case first to lower the number of factors in the EVTYPE variable
storm_df$EVTYPE = tolower(storm_df$EVTYPE)
storm_df$EVTYPE = factor(storm_df$EVTYPE)
We have two variables to answer this questions, the FATALITIES & INJURIES variables, so we will sum them up into a new varible called LIFE_DAMAGES.
# add the sum of the FATALITIES + INJURIES vars into LIFE_DAMAGES var
storm_df = mutate(storm_df, LIFE_DAMAGES = FATALITIES + INJURIES )
storm_df = arrange(storm_df,desc(LIFE_DAMAGES) )
# plot the graph showing the top harmful events types to life
ggplot(data= storm_df[1:10,], aes(x=EVTYPE, y=LIFE_DAMAGES ))+
geom_bar(stat = 'identity')+
xlab('Event Type')+
ylab('Number of life damages')+
ggtitle('Most harmful event type to population health')
we have two variables answer this questions, the PROPDMG & CROPDMG variables, so we will sum them up into a new variable called ECO_DAMAGES
# add the sum of the PROPDMG+CROPDMG into the ECO_DAMAGES var
storm_df = mutate(storm_df, ECO_DAMAGES = PROPDMG+CROPDMG )
storm_df = arrange(storm_df, desc(ECO_DAMAGES))
#plot the graph showing the top harmful event to the economy
ggplot(data=storm_df[1:10,], aes(x=EVTYPE, y=ECO_DAMAGES))+
geom_bar(stat = 'identity')+
xlab('Event Type')+
ylab('Number of economic damages')+
ggtitle('Most harmful event type to economy')
