Synopsis

This project involves exploring the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) storm database. This database tracks characteristics of major storms and weather events in the United States, including when and where they occur, as well as estimates of any fatalities, injuries, and property damage. The project aims to plot the harmful effects of weather events with respect to population health(classified as injuries or fatalities) and economic implications(classified as damage to property or crops). This analysis uses the aggregate data recorded for years between 1950 and 2011.

Cleaning and Getting Data

  • The data was obtained from "https://d396qusza40orc.cloudfront.net/repdata%2Fdata%2FStormData.csv.bz2"
  • Subset of the data (the top ten events causing maximum damage) was chosen since the database is huge
  • The date format of the data was modified and the expenses for the damages which had letters to indicate millions, billions or thousands were changed to numeric format.
