Purpose of the presentation

  • This is the response to the assignement of Developing of Data Products Coursera Course.
  • A world map is created using leaflet R package. The probability that a child born in 2015 will die before reaching the age of five if subject to current age-specific mortality rates was obtained from Gapminder.com.
  • The map shows mortality rates expressed as a rate per 1,000 live births. The color of the circle marks depends on the rate (green for the lower tercile, yellow for the middle and red for the higher). The size of the circles is proportional to the logarithm of the mortality rate.

Data acquisition

  • Mortality data was retrieved from Gapminder data repository. The origina data frame displays estimated rates from 1800 until 2015. I keep only data from the last year.
  • Central country coordinates and country 2 character iso codes were obtained.
  • The first code chunk (not shown) gets the mortality data from a google spreadsheet. It also gets codes and coordinates, and merges all in a data frames.

Under 5 yo child mortality rate

Probability (per 1,000 live births) that a child born in a specific year will die before reaching the age of five if subject to current age-specific mortality rates.
