A DNA content/number of cells calculator

Why this app?

This app is done for biologist to rapidly calculate the DNA content in a certain number of cells; or, given a certain amount of cells, calculating the ng of DNA inside. alt-text

From DNA to cells

Imagine you have lysed murine cells in a tube, you quantify by Picogreen* the amount of DNA in it and it is 1000 ng. *(http://www.lifetechnologies.com/order/catalog/product/P11496)

You now want to know how many cells you have in your tube:

  • First, choose the species (Mus Musculus is for mouse)
  • Second, select the “input type”, in this case ng DNA
  • Third, click on Go! The answer will be:
[1] "There are 174269.682054095 cells in 1000 ng of DNA"

From Cells to DNA

Now you have the opposite question: you have detached one million cells and, prior extracting and quantifying DNA, you want to predict the overall yield. Just digit the new number, the input type, and click again on GO!

[1] "There are 5738.23276781781 ng of DNA in 1e+06 cells."

Further Details

  • The app use a C-content (total number of bases in the genome) specific for each species (for the moment only human and mouse are supported)
  • For calculating the ng of a single base pair it uses the average molecular weight of a base pair divided by the Avogadro's number
  • You can find the link for the web application on this page: https://ilarius.shinyapps.io/Project/
