Project Proposal - The Data Incubator

1. Introduction

When we are planning to start a new business, what is one of the first things we should consider? It’s safety. But if a city is known to have high crime rates, who would want to start a business there?

All the local businesses and crimes involve interactions between people. There is a certain relationship between businesses and crimes or other data which invole these interactions. This project starts from this idea.

In addtion, data samples for other business reports, housing, tourism statistics, and so on, will be updated.

3. Quick Review

These figures show the place where crimes (red) occurred and food-inspection (green) failed. The crimes like “Theft” might happen anywhere (left) but relatively minor crime like “Public Peace Violation”
happend near restaurants/groceries.

The plot below shows the fraction of the “Publich Peace Violation (PPV)” to “Any Crimes” in each district with a red color and the fraction of the “Inspection Failure” in each district to “Total Inspection Failure.” Higher fraction of the “PPV” indicates relatively safer places that others. Based on this plot, “Food Inspection Rate” is lower where relatively safer places.

4. Proposal

I would like to take this opportunity to propose a prediction application for business interests.

What I would like to propose is that by using data analysis and prediction models, I think there is a certain relationship between crimes and small businesses that can be taken advantage of to offer a profitable location for startup businesses.

Based on reports by the Chicago crime report, it is actually difficult to find an area without crime. But, we can find a tendency that relatively safer places have low food inspection failures as well.

Therefore, the application in this project will make a prediction for new local businesses by analyzing food inspection data based on crime data.

The other advantage of this application is expandability. By adding new data samples on this application, for example, residential expenses data, it will make predictions about rational residence expenses based on the safety.

If given the opportunity, I can use data incubator as a method by which more convincing data can be obtained and analyzed to provide useful information for interested customers.
