Assignment 10B: Nobel Prize Approach

Author

Lakeranie Boodram

For this assignment, I plan to use JSON data from the Nobel Prize API to explore patterns among Nobel Prize recipients. I will retrieve the data directly from the API in R and transform it into tidy data frames for analysis.

My analysis will focus on four questions:

  1. Which ten birth countries have the most Nobel Prize laureates? I will group recipients by birth country and count each person once using their unique laureate ID.

  2. What is the ratio of male to female Nobel Prize winners in different categories? I will calculate the numbers of male and female winners in various categories of Nobel Prize excluding the prizes announced for institutions of people.

  3. Which people have been awarded the Nobel Prize more than once, and in which categories? I will track repeat winners through their unique IDs.

  4. How does the average approximate age of Nobel Prize recipients differ across categories before 2000 versus 2000 onward? I will subtract each recipient’s birth year from their award year, divide the awards into these two periods, and compare the average ages within each category.

I am going to use the jsonlite package to read in the JSON data, tidyr to expand the nested records, and dplyr for filtering, grouping and summarizing the data. I will pay attention to API pagination in order to get all records. My main data frame will have one row per recipient per award. I will use unique IDs to avoid double counting when counting individual recipients. Records with missing birth information will only be excluded from analyses that need that information.

For each question, I will include the R code, a table or plot, and a brief explanation of the findings. The final submission will be a single Quarto (.qmd) file containing all four questions, the data retrieval and cleaning steps, and the resulting answers.
