Introduction

We will study seven NBA players from different eras.

  • We will use their highest-scoring regular seasons.
  • We will compare shot attempts and points scored.
  • Our goal is to see how FGA and PPG are related.

PPG and FGA

We will use two statistics to compare NBA players.

PPG (Points Per Game)

  • Average points scored in one game.

FGA (Field Goal Attempts Per Game)

  • Average field goal shots attempted in one game.
  • Free throws are not included.

Calculating Points Per Game

PPG is calculated by dividing total points by games played.

\[ PPG = \frac{\text{Total Points}}{\text{Games Played}} \]

Michael Jordan (1986-87)

Jordan scored 3,041 points in 82 games.

\[ PPG = \frac{3041}{82} = 37.1 \]

Jordan averaged 37.1 PPG that season.

Calculating Field Goal Attempts

FGA is calculated by dividing total field goal attempts by games played.

\[ FGA = \frac{\text{Total Field Goal Attempts}}{\text{Games Played}} \]

Kobe Bryant (2005-06)

Kobe attempted 2,173 field goals in 80 games.

\[ FGA = \frac{2173}{80} = 27.2 \]

Kobe averaged 27.2 FGA that season.

NBA Player Statistics

We will use these seven seasons for our graphs.

Player Season PPG FGA
Wilt Chamberlain 1961-62 50.4 39.5
Michael Jordan 1986-87 37.1 27.8
Kobe Bryant 2005-06 35.4 27.2
James Harden 2018-19 36.1 24.5
Stephen Curry 2020-21 32.0 21.7
Kevin Durant 2013-14 32.0 20.8
LeBron James 2005-06 31.4 23.1

Exploring Shot Attempts and Scoring

This graph compares FGA and PPG for seven players.

Comparing NBA Scorers

This bar chart compares points per game.

Wilt had the highest PPG in our group.

Creating Scatter Plot

We used this code to compare FGA and PPG.

ggplot(data = nba, aes(x = FGA, y = PPG)) +
  geom_point(color = "blue", size = 3)
  • ggplot() creates the graph.
  • aes() selects the variables.
  • geom_point() adds the points.

Shot Attempts vs. Points Scored

This graph compares FGA and PPG for seven players.

Each point represents one player.

Finding Relationship

The line shows the overall scoring trend.

The graph shows a positive relationship.

Conclusion

We compared FGA and PPG for seven NBA players.

  • Players who take more shots generally score more points.
  • The graphs show a positive relationship.
  • Shooting accuracy and free throws also affect scoring.
