Introduction

STAR Math Placement dashboard looks at the results of the 2019 STAR math placement exams. It’s comparing the math placement scores according to student high school related ACT, SAT, and GPA scores, as well as testing dates, high schools, and intended career goals. Data comes from the 2019 STAR math placement spreadsheet. ACT math scores were also converted using the 2018 ACT/SAT tables, specifically table B2.

Rankings

High School Rankings

The table ranks the high schools by average math placement score for AQ. Schools with fewer than 3 students who have an AQ score are excluded, so that such small groups don’t dominate the rankings, as that would not be appropriate. Lastly, missing or uncertain school names are not included in the table.

Career Goal Rankings

The table ranks the intended career goals and different majors by average math placement score for AQ. Categories with fewer than five students (as the previous table) are excluded from the comparison.

Cleaned Student Data

Student Records

The table contains the cleaned student records. Missing values are assigned as NA when the correct information was not available. Also, the ACT conversion uses the official ACT math table, and the SAT_ACT_Max as the higher available SAT Math or converted ACT Math score.

Conclusion

The original dataset had 342 total student records as well as five separate attendance columns. Every record had a STAR date associated. When cleaning of the data was done, the invalid GPA value of 33.80 and SAT math values of 13 and 25 were changed to NA (since the actual values or corrections were not available). Some high school names were also adjusted to be more consistent, and other entries such as UNKNOWN and #MULTIVALUE were treated as missing school information.

The cleaned dataset provides a more constant way to compare math placement score results with the high school GPA, ACT/SAT Math scores, STAR dates, high schools, and career goals. The charts show detail on distributions and relationships, while the rankings provide a quick reference and comparisons for categories with enough students. The results also describe this group of STAR participants and are not proof that a school or any other factor from the summary caused a particular placement score.
