The Problem

Students balance study time, attendance, and sleep. Understanding how these habits relate can be difficult.

Our goal: Help students explore how daily habits affect an illustrative study index.

  • Students need a simple way to compare routines.
  • Static information cannot show changing scenarios.
  • StudySmart provides an interactive alternative.

The Solution

StudySmart is a Shiny application with three inputs:

  • Study time: 0–10 hours per day
  • Attendance: 0–100%
  • Sleep: 4–10 hours per night

The app recalculates the score when inputs change.

Formula: Index = 0.40 × Study + 0.35 × Attendance + 0.25 × Sleep

These are illustrative scores, not actual academic results.

Reproducible R Example

Example: 4 study hours, 75% attendance, and 7 hours of sleep.

study <- 100 * (1 - exp(-4/3.5)) / (1 - exp(-10/3.5))
attendance <- 75
sleep <- 100 * exp(-0.5 * ((7-8)/1.5)^2)
index <- round(0.40 * study + 0.35 * attendance + 0.25 * sleep)

cat("Study:", round(study, 1),
    "| Attendance:", attendance,
    "| Sleep:", round(sleep, 1),
    "| Overall index:", index, "/100")
## Study: 72.3 | Attendance: 75 | Sleep: 80.1 | Overall index: 75 /100
