Created on: October 25, 2026
This presentation explores the relationship between car speed and stopping distance using R and Plotly.
Our goal is to understand how stopping distance changes as speed increases.
About the Data
R includes a built-in dataset called cars.
speed: Speed of the car in miles per hour. dist: Distance required to stop the car in feet.
We will use an interactive scatter plot to explore these two variables.
Interactive Plot library(plotly)
plot_ly( data = cars, x = ~speed, y = ~dist, type = “scatter”, mode = “markers”, marker = list( color = “#6C63FF”, size = 10, opacity = 0.8 ), text = ~paste( “Speed:”, speed, “mph”, “
Stopping distance:”, dist, “feet” ), hoverinfo = “text” ) %>% layout( title = “Car Speed vs. Stopping Distance”, xaxis = list(title = “Speed (miles per hour)”), yaxis = list(title = “Stopping Distance (feet)”), plot_bgcolor = “#F8F9FC”, paper_bgcolor = “#FFFFFF” )
Try it: Hover over the points to see the speed and stopping distance. Zoom in or drag to explore the graph.
Findings Stopping distance generally increases as car speed increases. The relationship is positive: higher speeds tend to be associated with longer stopping distances. Individual observations vary, so speed alone does not explain every difference. Conclusion
This small project demonstrates how R, R Markdown, and Plotly can be used to communicate data visually.
Interactive plots help readers explore the data instead of looking at a static image.
