The big question

Why do some cars use less fuel than others?

Fuel efficiency is often measured in miles per gallon (MPG). In this presentation, we explore how it relates to:

  • Vehicle weight
  • Engine cylinder count
  • Transmission type

Dataset: mtcars, a classic dataset included with R, containing information on 32 car models.

Meet the data

Measure Result
Cars in dataset 32
Average fuel efficiency 20.1 MPG
Lightest car Lotus Europa (1.513 thousand lbs)
Heaviest car Lincoln Continental (5.424 thousand lbs)

These are descriptive statistics from a small sample. Relationships shown are associations, not proof that one factor alone causes better fuel economy.

Interactive chart: weight vs. fuel efficiency

Hover over a point to see the car model, MPG, weight, and cylinder count. Use the chart toolbar to zoom, pan, or download the chart.

Compare engine sizes

What did we learn?

  • In this dataset, heavier cars generally have lower fuel efficiency.
  • Cars with fewer cylinders tend to have higher average MPG.
  • Individual models may differ from the overall pattern, so exploring points is useful.

These results describe the mtcars dataset; they are not a ranking of modern cars.

Takeaway

A useful visualization turns a table into a pattern you can explore.

The interactive Plotly charts let you inspect individual cars, compare groups, and explore the relationship between vehicle weight and fuel efficiency.
