Intro

Optimal fuel efficiency is a growing necessity in today’s car manufacturing industry. These slides aim to analyze both city and highway fuel efficiency between various car manufacturers as well as how engine displacement correlates with fuel efficiency. Below is the equation which is used to calculate the city and highway fuel efficiency (MPG) within this data set.

\[ MPG = \frac{\text{miles driven}}{\text{gallons used}}\]

Further Context

Additionally, it may help to contextualize how gallons per miles (GPM) are calculated within this data set. The equation has been provided below:

\[ GPM = \frac{100}{\text{MPG}} \]

Car Manufacturer by City Fuel Efficiency

ggplot(mpg, aes(x = manufacturer, y = cty)) + geom_boxplot() +
  labs(x = "Car Manufacturer", y = "City Fuel Efficiency (MPG)")

Car Manufacturer by Highway Fuel Efficiency

ggplot(mpg, aes(x = manufacturer, y = hwy)) + geom_col() +
  labs(x = "Car Manufacturer", y = "Highway Fuel Efficiency (MPG)")

Analysis

The previous slides showed several car manufacturers by their city and highway fuel efficiency. Analyzing this data we can conclude that Honda has the highest city fuel efficiency in miles per gallon, with Toyota and Volkswagen following close behind. Meanwhile, in terms of highway fuel efficiency, Honda is among the worst of the manufacturers while Toyota remains one of the best followed by Volkswagen.

Engine Displacement and City/Highway Fuel Efficiency

Analysis

The previous slide shows how a lower engine displacement correlates with higher highway and city fuel efficiency. This is because the lower an engine’s displacement, or the amount of air and fuel needed to fire its cylinders per cycle, the less amount of air and fuel will be required per cycle. This is why we see a steep drop in fuel efficiency the higher the engine displacement becomes.

Conclusion

Various factors can influence the fuel efficiency of a vehicle, and utilizing data such as this can prove useful to make informed decisions about what cars we should be buying. Analyzing statistical data such as this is important, especially with rising costs of fuel, in order to save money and become more environmentally aware of our fuel usage.
