Rationale

Priming theory suggests that exposure to media containing violent messages can result in short-term attitude or behavior changes.

Considering priming theory, exposure to violent media prior to recess may influence the student’s short-term attitudes and behaviors, meaning that they may exhibit greater levels of aggressive behavior than students who participate in non-violent media.

Hypothesis

The mean total time, in minutes, each fifth-grade student had spent engaging in aggressive acts differs across levels of the type of lesson the student had completed during the 30 minutes prior to recess.

Variables & method

The categorical independent variable in the analysis indicated the type of lesson the student had completed during the 30 minutes prior to recess. Possible values included “Violent game” if the student had played “Exponent Fighter,” “Nonviolent game” if the student had played “Exponent Builder,” and “Art project” if the student had completed the art project.

The dependent variable was the continuous total time (in minutes) that each fifth-grade student had spent engaging in aggressive acts.

A one-way ANOVA was conducted to test whether the mean total time (in minutes) students spent engaging in aggressive acts differed by the type of activity completed prior to recess.

Results & discussion

The results supported the hypothesis. The mean number of minutes students spent engaging in aggressive acts differed significantly based on the type of lesson completed 30 minutes prior to recess. Tukey HSD post-hoc tests indicate significant differences among all three groups, with a p-value less than .001. The Shapiro-Wilk Normality Test indicates that the results are normal for all groups. The largest difference was between the violent game group and the art project group, with a mean difference of around 5.79 minutes. These findings are consistent with priming theory and suggest that exposure to violent media prior to recess is associated with higher levels of aggression among fifth-grade students.
